The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Bello Azeez, for staging his own kidnapping in a bid to extort money from relatives and acquaintances.
According to a statement released on Saturday, August 16, by the command’s spokesperson, Olushola Ayanlade, Azeez, a native of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, orchestrated the false abduction after his father refused to give him ₦500,000 to settle a debt.
Family members became suspicious when he insisted that ransom payments be made directly into his personal bank account, leading them to report the matter to the police.
Investigators traced his phone records and discovered that he never left Owo during the period he claimed to have been abducted.
Azeez was subsequently arrested and confessed to the crime.
Police authorities confirmed that he will face charges in court once investigations are concluded..
“This case underscores the dangers of greed and deceit, which can ruin lives. Parents and guardians are urged to guide their children against crime, peer influence, and moral decadence,” Ayanlade said.
He also urged members of the public to shun every form of deceit and remain supportive of the police in their efforts to foster peace, strengthen security, and advance the well-being of society.
