Veteran comic actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco, on Saturday, March 14, revealed that the trademarked status of the character has cost him several advertisement deals.

He explained that the Papa Ajasco character, including its signature bald cap and costume, is trademarked by Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP), restricting him from using the identity outside the show.

This restriction has limited his opportunities for advertising deals, brand endorsements, and other media appearances.

“Wale Adenuga has registered that particular character.

“Anyone who wants to use me usually wants the Papa Ajasco character with everything that comes with it.

“But it has never been easy; that is why you don’t see me in adverts or billboards. It is painful.

“When people want to use me as Abiodun, they still want to see Papa Ajasco,” he said.

The 65-year-old actor disclosed that he earns just ₦45,000 to ₦50,000 per episode, with filming sessions now occurring as seldom as once every one or two years.

He attributed this decline to the rise of digital streaming and social media, noting that the once-dominant sitcom has struggled to maintain its footprint on local television.

He further appealed to his long-time fans and the general public to continue supporting the program.

Abiodun, who also worked for many years with the Lagos state council for arts and culture before retiring about five years ago, said retirement has not brought financial stability.

“Things have not been easy. I am always thinking. I have no car of my own and no house of my own.

“People believe Papa Ajasco is a millionaire or billionaire, but the remuneration is very poor,” he said.

He noted that even top political figures, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, have recognized him by his stage name.

Abiodun reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the legacy of Papa Ajasco despite these challenges.

He added that he is currently working with Wale Adenuga Productions on a new project, Gen Z Papi, aimed at introducing the beloved character to a younger audience while continuing to entertain longtime fans.
