A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, when a fuel-laden truck collided with a commercial Nissan Micra carrying passengers, killing an elderly passenger who was seated beside the driver.

The crash, which occured at the Iwo Road under-bridge, saw the truck pushed the Micra against another truck marked ECQD704 heading towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing immediate gridlock in the area, and attempts by passers-by to rescue the trapped passengers were unsuccessful.

Witnesses said the fuel truck experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it struck the Micra.

Emergency responders arrived more than an hour after the incident. The driver of the Micra sustained injuries and was taken for treatment.

Both truck drivers, it was  learned, fled the scene immediately after the accident to avoid possible mob retaliation.

Officials from the Oyo State Police Command cordoned off the area as personnel from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority, OYRTM, supervised the clearing of crates of soft drinks that spilled from a beverage truck also involved in the crash.

OYRTM later cleared the road, allowing traffic to resume along the busy axis.
