The internal strife within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has escalated as a faction of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, that suspended Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has named Yayari Ahmed, the party’s Treasurer, as his successor.

This development was announced in a statement issued by the PDP National Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Friday, October 11.

The statement read, “Following the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the National Working Committee, NWC, has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.

“The appointment which takes immediate effect is pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

“The NWC calls on all Organs, leaders, critical stakeholder and members of our great Party to remain focused at this critical time especially as the NWC commences arrangements towards the holding of the Party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting already scheduled for Thursday, 24th October, 2024.”

Earlier, the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, October 11, issued a restraining order preventing the National Executive Committee, NEC, and Board of Trustees, BoT, of PDP from removing Umar Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of the party.

The court mandated that only Damagum be recognized as the PDP national chairman until the party’s national convention scheduled for December next year.

Justice Peter Lifu delivered the ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by Senator Umar El-Gash Maina against the PDP NEC, BoT, and others. The judge asserted that according to Articles 42, 47, and 67 of the PDP Constitution, national officers can only be elected during the National Convention.

In the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/579/2024, Justice Lifu emphasized that all PDP members must adhere to the party’s Constitution and act in accordance with its provisions.
