The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, one of Nigeria’s premier medical institutions, has been without electricity since October 2024.
As a result, families of patients admitted to the hospital have been forced to bring their generators and solar inverters to power the hospital’s equipment, ensuring that medical care continues.
The ongoing power failure, caused by a massive electricity bill owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), led to the disconnection of power to the hospital on October 26, 2024.
This power outage has severely disrupted critical medical services, forcing patients and their families to provide personal power sources for life-saving treatments.
In response, the Oyo State Government has acknowledged the hospital’s challenges and, in a post on X, revealed plans to connect UCH to its newly commissioned Independent Power Plant.
This comes after recent protests by medical students from the University of Ibadan (UI), who took to the streets to demand a permanent solution to the ongoing power crisis at the hospital.
