Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has initiated a ₦1.5 billion lawsuit against political activist, Deji Adeyanju, over allegedly defamatory statements made against him on social media.

The case, filed at the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division, accuses Adeyanju of spreading false and malicious claims that have allegedly damaged Obi’s reputation and integrity.

According to the writ of summons marked O/254/75 and issued on October 3 by his counsel, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), Obi is seeking a declaration that Adeyanju’s posts and comments on his verified X account, Facebook page, and Instagram handle were false, baseless, unfounded, malicious, reckless, scandalous, and defamatory.

Obi is also requesting that Adeyanju be ordered to publish a full public apology and retraction across all his social media platforms and in at least three national newspapers, as well as on major television stations.

The suit further demands that Adeyanju delete all offending posts where he allegedly described Obi with phrases such as religious bigot, fraud, scum, and political prostitute.

Additionally, Obi seeks a perpetual injunction restraining Adeyanju, his associates, or representatives from making any further defamatory publications about him.

The former governor is also claiming ₦500 million in aggravated damages and ₦1 billion in general damages for reputational harm, ridicule, and emotional suffering. He further requests 18 percent annual interest on the total judgment sum until it is fully paid, along with the costs of litigation.

No hearing date has been set for the case.
