The Imo State Police Command has arrested two men for gang-raping a 20-year-old lady in Owerri the state capital.
This incident occurred on Saturday, November 18, when the victim was lured to a particular location where she faced a series of torture from the culprits.
The incident was brought to the attention of the police and the public through an X(Twitter) user with the handle, @PIDOMNIGERIA, in a series of posts, narrating how the survivor was raped by the culprits.
The X user stated that the victim was raped between November 18 and 19.
It said the culprits hacked into the WhatsApp account of her friend through whom they lured her to a location.
They seized her phone, threatened to kill her if she failed to cooperate with them, and then went on to rape her despite the fact she was menstruating at the time.
When the victim got back home, she confided in her male friend, who mobilized other young men to capture two of the culprits while the third person escaped.
It said the unidentified young men were later handed over to the police and it was discovered that one of them was detained and released by the police last month over another rape case.
“He has been arrested twice in the past over (separate) rape cases,” the X user said.
The post added that while the suspect’s mother had been calling the survivor daily and pleading for her son to be forgiven, the wife of the second rapist visited the station and openly told the police to send her husband to prison because he is irresponsible.
The X user said the victim had gone to a hospital to run a test given that she was raped by the suspects without protection.
In response to the incident, the police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a post on his X handle on Sunday, November 26.
Okoye, an assistant superintendent of police, stated that the police had taken necessary investigative steps to ensure that the victim gets justice.
Similarly, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a post on his X handle on Sunday, condemned the incident and also affirmed that the matter will never be swept under the carpet.
Adejobi, who is an assistant commissioner of police said the Force had contacted the police in the state to do the needful.
