The Edo state police command on Tuesday, January 20, confirmed the arrest of a 42-year-old bus driver, Osabuohen Igerevba, for killing his 32-year-old girlfriend, Joy Jerome, over infidelity at Upper Sakponba road, Benin city.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, Igerevba was arrested on January 10 after the chief priest of Ikpe community alerted the police to the discovery of a female body near a river.
Operatives from the Idogbo police division recovered the body, which was later confirmed dead by medical personnel and deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Mortuary.
Ikoedem stated that Igerevba and Jerome were in a romantic relationship, and he picked her up at her residence on January 9, but an argument broke out while they were en route to his residence.
The confrontation began after Igerevba accused her of infidelity, claiming he had been unable to reach her for two days, which resulted in him physically assaulting her.
She became unresponsive and was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Igerevba confessed to disposing her body at a riverside after the incident, where it was discovered the following day.
