The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two occupants travelling with world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi.
He said the driver was arrested in connection with the crash, which occurred on Monday around the Danco area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement partly read.
The accident, it was learned, happened before noon on Monday, December 29, when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and two of his close friends collided with a stationary truck.
The vehicle involved in the crash was identified as a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN.
Two passengers lost their lives in the incident. They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a British national.
Following the accident, the Lagos and Ogun state governments announced on Wednesday, December 31, that Anthony Joshua had been discharged from the hospital.
The announcement was made in a joint statement signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Gbenga Omotosho, Lagos State Commissioner for Information.
The two state governments expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate. They offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and strength for their families to cope with the loss.
The statement also disclosed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their last respects to the two late friends, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that day.
According to the governments, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after medical doctors confirmed he was clinically stable and fit to continue his recovery at home.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State thanked members of the public for the outpouring of concern, prayers and goodwill following the incident.
They also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his support and commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and dedication.
