Police kill 3 gunmen who attacked INEC office in Imo (Video)

    The Imo State Police Command on Monday Morning of December 12, 2022, killed three gunmen who attacked the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

    The gunmen also killed one police officer and injured one in the gun duel that lasted for an hour and kept the residents of Owerri, the Imo state capital awake throughout the night, PUNCH disclosed.

    The spokesperson for the police in Imo state, Michael Abattam confirmed the death of a cop and the injury of another operative in the police command headquarters in Owerri, where the lifeless bodies of the gunmen were paraded said five rifles, two vehicles, charms, locally made bombs, phones, and money were recovered from the slain gunmen.

    Abattam said, “They (gunmen) attacked the INEC headquarters in Owerri (Imo state) around 3 am. They threw bombs on the roof of the INEC building but unfortunately for them, they were resisted by our (police) men guarding the place. They came in four vehicles and were fully armed.

    “While they engaged our (police) men on ground, we reinforced. Noticing that we were stronger, they ran away, abandoning one of their vehicles. We gave them a hot chase towards Onitsha Road. Fortunately, we neutralized three of them.

    “Others escaped with bullet wound injuries. Unfortunately, one of our (police) men paid the supreme price. Another one was injured. We recovered two vehicles. We also recovered five rifles, charms, locally made explosives, phones, money, and other exhibits.”
