Police nab officer for accidentally killing woman in Ekiti

    Officers of the Ekiti State Police Command have apprehended an unidentified police officer who accidentally shot a woman identified as Ifeoluwa Adekalu to death at the Okela Police Station in Ado Ekiti, the state’s capital.

    The state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Assistant Inspector-General (AIG), Adewale Adeniran, revealed that the incident occured on Thursday, January 2.

    He noted that the police officer, who was visiting the station was in a celebratory mood upon hearing about the promotion of one of his colleagues fired a shot.

    Unfortunately the bullet struck the woman which eventually led to her death.

    The CP also stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and taken into custody.

    An anonymous eyewitness stated that the accidental discharge of the policeman’s gun, who was assigned to a different unit of the State Police Command, struck the woman in front of a salon across from the police station as she was returning from paying her rent.

    The victim was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but later died from the gunshot wounds.

    Adeniran finally stated that the officer would undergo interrogation based on the Nigerian Police Act.
