The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that five worshippers lost their lives while 35 others sustained injuries following a suicide bombing at a mosque located within Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The incident occurred when a suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque, causing panic and multiple casualties among worshippers.
Confirming the figures, the police spokesperson in Borno State, Nahum Daso, said those injured in the explosion were promptly taken to various hospitals across Maiduguri for urgent medical attention.
He further disclosed that operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, unit, in collaboration with other security agencies, were immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area.
According to him, the vicinity was cordoned off and thoroughly searched to ensure there were no secondary explosive devices that could pose further danger to the public.
