Officers of the Kwara State Police Command, on Thursday, April 21, saved a man named Olayinka Segun Owolabi, from attempting suicide as a result of the economic difficulties he claimed to be experiencing.
Olayinka is from Odo-Otin Local Government Area, Odo-Otin No.54, Ile Alagbede Abutu Oyan.
The attempted suicide was prevented by police operatives connected to the Budo Nuhu police station in Ilorin at around 1800 hours on Thursday, Daily Post reports.
“A passer-by sighted what looked like a man hanging on a tree very close to the main road at NASFAT area along checking point bus stop in Ilorin and alerted the police,” the police stated.
The police raced to the scene, removed the rope around his neck, and transported him to Tobi Hospital, Taiwo Road, Ilorin, where he is still receiving treatment.
After regaining consciousness and being interrogated, Olayinka said that he was “tired of life, having lost his job and both parents with no support forthcoming from anywhere and no promise of the next meal pushed him to resolve to terminate his life.”
Tuesday Assayomo, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Police Command, advised members of the public, particularly parents, guidance and community leaders, to always watch and monitor the activities of their children and wards, and to discharge their duty of care diligently to members of their communities, in light of the global economic situation, which has undoubtedly harmed the well-being of a large number of the population.
Tuesday Assayomo again advised individuals to avoid killing their own lives, emphasizing that, in addition to being against God’s command, any attempt to take one’s own life is also a felony punishable by law if the perpetrator survives the effort.
While promising to always safeguard the safety of people’ lives and property, the CP advised criminal elements to stay away from Kwara State unless they wish to be acccomodated in the state’s correctional facilities.
