The Rivers State Police Command has taken swift action against three of its officers involved in the abduction and extortion of $3,000 from two travelers.
The spokesperson for the command, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, announced on Monday, January 22, that the officers, namely Doubara Edonyabo, Talent Mungo, and Inspector Odey Michael, will face disciplinary measures, including an orderly room trial and official queries.
The victims were falsely accused of fraud, taken across three states Abia, Delta, and Bayelsa before being extorted of $3,000, equivalent to N4,200,000.
The police promptly apprehended the officers and conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the recovery of the extorted money, which was returned to the victims on Thursday, January 18.
The spokesperson for the command Iringe-Koko emphasized that the officer’s actions were in clear violation of the law and ethical standards expected of the Nigeria Police Force.
As a response, the two Assistant Superintendents have received official queries, while the Inspector is scheduled for an orderly room trial.
In a commitment to transparency and accountability, the Rivers State Police Command publicly paraded the officers.
Iringe-Koko expressed regret over the negative impact such misconduct might have on the reputation of the command and the Nigeria Police Force but assured the public of the command’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
She reiterated that the actions of a few individuals should not overshadow the dedication and sacrifice of the majority of officers who serve with honor.
The command reassured the public of its commitment to serving and protecting the community with professionalism and integrity, urging citizens to maintain faith in the police as they strive to uphold trust and confidence.
