Princes from the Oyo royal lineage have taken the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, to the Oyo State High Court in Oyo Town, asking the court to bar the monarch from participating in certain public engagements they believe diminish the dignity of the throne.
The case, filed as Suit No: HOY/18/2026, lists Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina and Adeyemi Adebayo as claimants.
In their application before the court, they are requesting a perpetual injunction preventing the monarch, either by himself, servants, privies or any other person whatsoever, from participating in events they consider unbefitting of his position as the symbolic traditional leader of the Yoruba people.
The plaintiffs are also asking the court to restrain the monarch from performing in any capacity, traditional or official, that could portray him as subordinate to any other Oba within Yorubaland.
In addition, they are seeking a declaration affirming the historical and cultural weight of the Alaafin stool, arguing that the office holds significance not only across Yorubaland but also within Nigeria, West Africa and beyond.
The claimants further want the court to recognize the Alaafin as a central emblem of unity and custodian of Yoruba cultural and traditional heritage.
They are equally requesting judicial affirmation that the Alaafin of Oyo remains the paramount ruler and the appointing authority over all chieftaincy titles within Oyo Town, as well as Oyo North and Oyo South.
