Staff of Ikeja Electric staged a protest on Thursday, calling for the removal of their Business Manager, Abayo Bolorunde, over alleged intimidation and mass dismissals within the company.
Staff members, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, accused Bolorunde of forcing employees to work under hostile conditions despite his reported retirement.
The protest, which took place at one of the company’s offices, recorded heavy security presence after management reportedly invited police to the scene.
Protesting workers alleged that under his watch, more than 60 employees were dismissed, leaving those who remained to bear heavier workloads. They claimed Bolorunde frequently threatened staff with punitive measures if performance targets were not met, a situation they described as “unrealistic and oppressive.”
Several employees mentioned that the company extended Bolorunde’s contract by a year after his retirement, despite mounting complaints against him.
“Keeping him in office has only made things worse for staff,” one protester said, insisting that management had ignored their appeals.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has declared support for the protesting staff. The union described the contract extension as unfair and demanded both Bolorunde’s removal and the reversal of recent retrenchments. NUEE also urged the company’s management to engage in dialogue to prevent further unrest.
Ikeja Electric management has not issued an official statement on the protest or responded to the allegations.
