Some residents of Osun state, on Saturday, January 28, blocked some major roads in Osogbo and Ilesa regions of the state, to protest against the removal of Ademola Adeleke as the state governor.
The Osun election petition tribunal, on Friday, January 27, sacked Adeleke as the state governor, and also ordered that the certificate of return should be withdrawn from him and issued to the immediate past governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola.
The tribunal sacked Adeleke for over-voting in some polling units across the state.
The protesters, who prevented vehicular movement along Osogbo/Ikirun road, also blocked Gbongan/Osogbo road, according to The Punch.
While many commuters were stranded and had to trek long distances to their destinations, many business places did not open to customers over the fear of attack by the protesters.
At Igbona area of the state, the convoy of the state commissioner of police (CP), Kehinde Longe, was also stopped by some of the protesters.
An eyewitness, who witnessed the incident, said that operatives that were in the convoy of the CP later cleared the barricade and moved on.
At Ilesa, the popular roundabout was also blocked, forcing commuters to take alternative routes to their various destinations.
The state’s police command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, while speaking on the development on Saturday afternoon, “More police operatives have been deployed to the identified spots where roads were blocked. The situation is under control.”
