Residents scamper for safety as gas explosion rocks Lagos community

    There was pandemonium at a market close to Council Bus-Stop in Idimu community, Lagos State on Saturday following a gas explosion that occurred in the area.
    Those in the neighbourhood reportedly scampered for safety as some shops were gutted by fire.
    Several goods were destroyed as a result of the gas explosion.
    Report has it that seven lock-up shops were razed in the inferno. As well, some vehicles that were parked in a mechanic workshop nearby were destroyed by the fire.
    A statement by the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Margaret Adeseye, read that an emergency call was received around 2pm.
    It added that the fire which resulted from leakage of a gas cylinder in use at one of the shops led to the explosion that spread to several other shops.
    It stated that the fire had been doused by fire fighters in conjunction with the assistance of those in the area.
    It was learned that there was no casualty in the incident. On September 24, 2020, several persons were injured in an explosion that occurred at Cele Bus Stop, Iju Ishaga area of Lagos.
    Cars, shops and houses near the scene of the explosion were also razed.
    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the explosion was caused by a truck conveying petrol.
    A nearby mini-market was also razed by the inferno and electric cables in the area were destroyed. “On arrival at the scene, it was observed that there was a gas explosion at the aforementioned address.
    “Further investigation revealed that an unknown truck conveying gasoline had a lone accident and exploded. The impact of the explosion led to fire at adjoining buildings and several vehicles were burnt.
    “Several persons were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment,” LASEMA said in a statement.
