The governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has received a letter of approval from the federal government for the construction of the Lekki airport.
The letter was presented to the governor by Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, at the Ehingbeti Lagos economic summit on Tuesday, October 11.
Sirika, while speaking at the event, said that the airport will link Nigeria to the world, and open Lagos state to more international economic partnerships, The Nation reports.
Recall that Jubril Gawat, senior special assistant (SSA) to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on new media, on Friday, October 7, disclosed that the state government would commence the construction of a new airport in the Lekki-Epe axis of the state.
Gawat said that the project is expected to begin next year, and would be constructed on a 3,500 hectares of land.
“The Lagos state government has declared its readiness to construct a new airport on the Lekki-Epe axis of the state,” he tweeted.
“This was disclosed by the special adviser to the governor on public private partnerships (PPP) Ope George on Thursday, October 6.
“Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu has sought and obtained approval from the federal government for the construction of the new airport in Lagos.
“The project is expected to take off in 2023. It will be constructed on 3,500 hectares of land, master plan and aeronautical designs are in place.
“Studies are currently ongoing about strategies, funding and other issues, after which the project will be taken to the market place.
“The airport, which is expected to cater to a minimum of five million people yearly, will be constructed in partnership with local and foreign investors,” Gawat added.
