Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, on Friday, April 10, disclosed that security forces had prior intelligence about the terrorist attack that killed the brigade commander, Brigadier General Braimoh, three days before it happened.
Zulum made this known during a sympathy visit to Benisheikh, Kaga local government area, after the assault on the 15 Task Force Brigade that killed the brigade commander, Brigadier General Braimoh, alongside several soldiers and civilians.
Describing the incident as shocking, the governor condemned the attack and called for an urgent overhaul of security strategies.
“This is one of the most surprising attacks I’ve witnessed in recent times,” Zulum said.
“Credible intelligence had been available for about three days. There is a need to reassess our security architecture.”
His remarks have raised concerns about how the attackers managed to strike despite warnings.
Benisheikh, a key town along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, remains a strategic military hub in the fight against Boko Haram.
Though security has improved in recent years, sporadic attacks continue to expose the resilience of insurgents in the north-east.
Zulum stressed the need for better intelligence coordination, vigilance, and proactive measures to protect both military bases and civilians.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s support for security agencies and local vigilantes.
“We will continue to support the Armed Forces and strengthen community resilience to ensure Benisheikh does not fall into the hands of Boko Haram,” he said.
The governor extended condolences to the families of fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifice as a symbol of patriotism.
