The Senate has instructed its Finance Committee to suspend further discussions on the tax reform bills pending the outcome of a crucial meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF.
The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, announced this decision during Wednesday’s plenary session. He explained that a special committee had been established to address contentious issues within the proposed bills.
A high-level meeting with the AGF has been scheduled for Thursday, December 5, to resolve the areas of contention surrounding the tax reforms.
This step comes amid vigorous debates among lawmakers aimed at reconciling differing viewpoints on the legislation.
Over recent days, the controversial provisions of the bills have drawn significant criticism from stakeholders, prompting the Senate leadership to call for a harmonization session.
This special meeting, to be chaired by the Minority Leader, will take place at the National Assembly, offering lawmakers an opportunity to align their positions on the legislation.
The special committee addressing the issues is chaired by Senator Abba Moro and includes Senators Tahir Monguno, Adamu Aliero, Orji Uzor Kalu, Seriake Dickson, Titus Zam, Yahaya Abdullahi, Solomon Adeola, Sani Musa, and Mukhail Abiru.
Together with the Senate leadership, the committee is expected to spearhead efforts to craft a balanced, inclusive, and nationally beneficial tax reform framework that addresses the concerns raised by stakeholders.
