(Photo by Pau BARRENA / AFP) Colombian pop icon Shakira has reached a settlement with Spanish authorities in her long-standing tax fraud case, avoiding a potentially lengthy prison sentence and a hefty fine. Under the terms of the deal, Shakira will receive a three-year suspended sentence and pay a fine of €7.5 million (approximately $8 million). Shakira had been accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($15.8 million) in income taxes between 2012 and 2014, charges she vehemently denied. The allegations stemmed from her residency status in Spain during that period. Prosecutors maintained that Shakira had spent more than six months in Spain each year, making her a Spanish tax resident, while her defense argued that she had maintained her primary residence in the Bahamas. Despite her denials, Shakira faced the possibility of up to eight years in prison and a fine of up to $26 million if found guilty. In a statement released following the settlement, Shakira expressed her desire to move past the ordeal for the sake of her children. “While I have always maintained my innocence, I have decided to settle this case to spare my children from the stress of a lengthy legal battle,” she stated. “I always wanted to resolve this issue and have been in full cooperation with the Spanish authorities, who have been fair and professional.” Shakira’s settlement brings an end to a saga that has cast a shadow over her career in recent years. The Grammy-winning singer, known for global hits like “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” has maintained a strong connection with her Spanish fanbase, despite the legal challenges. With the tax fraud case resolved, Shakira can now focus on her music and other endeavors, free from the looming threat of a prison sentence and a massive fine. Her resilience and determination throughout the ordeal have served as an inspiration to many, and her music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
