The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) announced on January 3 that all public primary and junior secondary schools (JSS) in the state would resume for the second term on Monday, January 5, amid ongoing security concerns across several communities.
In a statement issued by the executive chairman of SUBEB, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, parents and the general public were assured that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure a coordinated and orderly reopening of schools statewide.
According to the Board, the first-term break will end on Sunday, January 4, with teaching and other academic activities expected to begin the following day in all schools under its jurisdiction.
Tambuwal called on stakeholders in the basic education sector, including parents and guardians, traditional and religious leaders, School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), to support the resumption process and encourage pupils to return to school as scheduled.
He further instructed education secretaries and school support officers to commence immediate monitoring and supervision of schools to ensure compliance with the resumption date and uphold academic standards.
To enhance oversight, the SUBEB chairman revealed that three special monitoring teams, led by permanent board members, will be deployed across the state’s three senatorial zones to evaluate resumption levels and the readiness of schools.
Tambuwal also issued a warning to contractors handling classroom construction, perimeter fencing, borehole installation and furniture supply to accelerate work and deliver projects in accordance with agreed timelines.
The board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted access to basic education and protecting the learning prospects of children in Sokoto state despite prevailing security challenges.
