Nigeria’s Super Eagles will not be participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Their hopes were dashed after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African play-offs final.
The clash, which took place on Sunday in Morocco, saw both sides battle fiercely, with neither able to secure a decisive advantage. Regulation and extra time concluded with a 1-1 draw, setting the stage for penalties.
In the end, DR Congo emerged victorious in the shootout, sending the Nigerian squad home and securing their place at the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico come 2026.
The Super Eagles now face the task of regrouping and preparing for future competitions.
