Gunmen, suspected to be hired assassins, on Friday, December 16, killed the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Onuimo local government area in the Imo state house of assembly, Christopher Elehu.
Apart from killing the politician, the gunmen also destroyed his property including a motorcycle.
A source stated that the gunmen struck in the early hours of Friday and shot sporadically for over two hours, The Punch reports.
He said that, “Gunmen have killed Christopher Elehu, popularly known as Wasco.
“Until his death, he was the Labour Party (LP) candidate in Onuimo local government area.
“The gunmen invaded his house when everybody had gone to sleep and shot sporadically for over two hours.
“They killed Elehu and burnt his house. They also destroyed his property. His corpse was laying on the floor with matchet cuts when villagers gathered in the morning,” he added.
The death of the politician came just ten days after another LP chieftain from Okigwe area of Imo state, Chukwunonye Irouno, died suddenly.
Irouno, who was billed to anchor LP’s presidential campaign rally in the state, slumped a night to the occasion.
He was rushed to Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Owerri where he was pronounced dead.
The Imo state police command is yet to verify the incident at the time of filing this report.
