Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, has stated that withdrawing from the PDP presidential primary contest was his own way of boosting democracy in Nigeria.
Mr Tambuwal addressed publicly for the first time the reason for his withdrawal when speaking to his supporters on Friday, June 3 evening at Sokoto Government House.
Just before the election, Mr Tambuwal stepped down in favor of Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President. He also urged his fans to back Mr Abubakar in the election.
“What we’ve done is for the good of our party and the country as a whole. Thank you to everyone who prayed for me and our party. The sacrifice I’ve made on your behalf aims to strengthen our party, our democracy, and, by God’s grace, to soften the landing of our polity,” he stated.
Mr Tambuwal claimed that his leaders taught him to make sacrifices for others, particularly for the sake of the country.
According to Premium Times, he urged residents of the state as well as Nigerians to vote for the PDP.
“This is in consonance with the teachings of our leaders and the [emulation] of the examples they have given to us in the past: that we must continue to make sacrifice for the good of all of us and our country.
“I thank the people of Sokoto state and all my supporters across the country for their support. Rest assured, we shall work assiduously for the victory of our party come 2023 General Elections.”
