The Anambra State Joint Enforcement Team, known as Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, Ocha Brigade, apprehended 14 individuals who were using counterfeit military uniforms to engage in criminal activities in Onitsha and its surrounding areas.
The Managing Director of Ocha Brigade, Celestine Anere, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on Thursday, September 22 2023, across various locations in Onitsha.
Anere revealed that these individuals wore counterfeit army uniforms for a range of unlawful activities, such as robbery, intimidating innocent residents and coercing money from both motorists and pedestrians within the region. Additionally, he disclosed that several of the suspects had admitted to their involvement in theft and the snatching of phones and valuables from commuters and local residents.
He elaborated that a portion of the suspects had confessed to drug use and the collection of intelligence on behalf of their criminal associates.
“Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, Ocha Brigade, has previously arrested and prosecuted some of the hoodlums in similar cases and will continue to sanitise the state from criminals and drug syndicates.
“The effort to rid the state of criminal elements is in line with the mandate of the state government’s clean, healthy, livable and prosperous homeland. Let’s secure our state from criminal elements.
“We also appealed to the public to call the customer service lines provided for emergencies and inquiries”, he said.
