A notorious terrorist kingpin, Isiya Kwashen Garwa, has released 70 kidnap victims in Katsina State following a peace deal brokered with community leaders and government representatives.
The latest release took place in Faskari local government area, where 40 captives were handed over to community leaders.
This followed the earlier release of 30 hostages two days before, bringing the total number of freed victims to 70.
Residents said the development was part of an agreement reached with Garwa’s camp to reduce attacks and sustain dialogue.
“We hope this will mark the beginning of peace in our communities,” a resident stated.
In a video circulating online, Garwa confirmed the releases but accused the military of targeting civilians.
“During Friday prayers, soldiers raided Ruwangodiya and injured our Hausa and Fulani people. If such assaults continue, the peace deal will not hold,” he warned.
Security sources, however, dismissed the allegations, insisting that operations in the area were aimed at criminals.
“Our operations target only bandit hideouts and are meant to protect innocent citizens”.
The Katsina state government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Authorities confirmed that the freed victims, many of whom were taken from farming settlements, were receiving medical checks and debriefing before being reunited with their families.
Officials stressed that dialogue remains a component of the state’s security approach, but warned that armed groups must disarm and face justice.
“Peace cannot be built on conditions that excuse criminality,” an official said.
