Twenty three soldiers in Niger Republic fell victim to a terrorist ambush near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali.
This has sparked concerns over jihadist violence in the region.
According to the country’s defense ministry on Thursday, March 21, the attack occurred in Tillaberi, a western area known for its susceptibility to such assaults.
The incident occurred during a security sweep in the volatile three-border region, with Niger’s military forces encountering a complex ambush while striving to reassure local communities besieged by armed groups.
The assailants, estimated at about 30, detonated homemade bombs and suicide vehicles on the Nigerien soldiers, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries.
“They were killed during a ‘complex ambush. About 30 terrorists had been neutralised.
“The army raids were meant to reassure local people who were being targeted by armed groups engaged in murders, extortion and cattle rustling”, the ministry said.
This incident is one of the many challenges faced by the military leaders who assumed control following a coup in July 2023.
The military cited the deteriorating security landscape as the primary reason for overthrowing the civilian government.
Despite efforts to contain jihadist threats, the persistent attacks highlight the ongoing struggle to restore stability and safeguard vulnerable populations in the region.
