The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has committed more than ₦30 billion this year to improve security in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.
The announcement was made in Katsina by Alhaji Aminu Masari, chairman of TETFund’s board of trustees on Tuesday, November 25.
He said the funding has already enhanced safety for students, lecturers, and other campus residents.
Masari explained that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s plan to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment.
“Just as we created a budget line for electricity, we established a dedicated line for security. Students and academic staff need a safe environment to thrive,” he said.
Institutions have applied for support to install solar powered streetlights, perimeter fences, and other security infrastructure to reduce risks on campuses.
He also praised president Bola Tinubu for approving a 50% development levy under the 2024 Nigerian tax bill, which will boost TETFund’s capacity for interventions.
Masari noted that a recent national town hall meeting brought together policymakers, lawmakers, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) leaders, vice chancellors, and students to exchange ideas and guide future TETFund policies.
TETFund’s funding strategy aims to make Nigerian tertiary institutions globally competitive in research, manpower development, and infrastructure.
In 2025, the Fund received a record ₦1.6 trillion from the 3% education tax, allocated to areas including security, energy, medical training, and student support.
Specifically, ₦25 billion was dedicated to campus security upgrades, ₦70 billion to solar and gas powered electricity projects, and over ₦100 billion to medical sciences training, while ₦460 billion went to direct institutional interventions and ₦225 billion to the Nigerian education loan fund to expand student loans.
