TPresident Bola Tinubu will on Sunday, October 12, leave Abuja for Rome, Italy, to attend the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, which will centre on tackling the growing security crisis in West Africa.
The summit, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 14, will convene world leaders, senior intelligence and defence officials from African nations, as well as representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, to deliberate on the region’s worsening security situation.
The Aqaba Process, launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan and co-chaired by the Jordanian and Italian governments, serves as a counter-terrorism platform promoting global cooperation against violent extremism.
The initiative acknowledges the complex security realities facing West Africa — including the spread of terrorist groups, the convergence between organised crime and terrorism, and the increasing overlap between Sahel-based insurgencies and maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
Participants are expected to share intelligence insights, evaluate regional security dynamics, and develop coordinated strategies to counter threats on both land and sea. Discussions will also focus on curbing online radicalisation and dismantling digital networks that enable terrorist recruitment and propaganda.
In addition to participating in the plenary sessions, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to explore collaborative measures aimed at addressing security instability across the West African subregion.
Accompanying the President on the trip are the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu–Ojukwu; the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, alongside other senior government officials.
