President Bola Tinubu on Monday held a meeting with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, marking their first official engagement since assuming their new roles.
The senior military officers arrived at the Presidential Villa together in the evening, where they were received by the President.
Those in attendance included the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen W. Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral I. Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj-Gen E.A.P. Undiendeye.
The meeting followed President Tinubu’s announcement on Friday, October 24, of sweeping changes within the nation’s military hierarchy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national security framework. The appointments were detailed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.
Under the new structure, General Olufemi Oluyede was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa, who had held the position since mid-2023. Major-General W. Shaibu was named Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke became Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas assumed office as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retained his role as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses his most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement read in part.
President Tinubu urged the newly appointed military leaders to demonstrate exceptional professionalism, discipline, and unity as they take charge of the country’s defence operations.
He emphasized the need for renewed vigilance and collaboration in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
