President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law, concluding a rapid legislative process that followed renewed concerns over the 2027 general elections timetable.

The bill was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 16, after weeks of fresh deliberations triggered by debates over proposed amendments and their potential implications for the next election cycle.

Lawmakers had earlier approved the legislation but reconvened in an emergency session to revisit contentious provisions, particularly those linked to the sequencing and timing of the 2027 elections.

Following further consultations and adjustments, both chambers re-adopted the harmonised version of the bill and transmitted it to the President for assent.

With President Bola Tinubu’s signature, the revised electoral framework has now come into effect, setting the legal foundation for preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
