A tricycle operator was killed while two passengers sustained serious injuries on Wednesday following a multiple-vehicle crash at Ekoro junction inward Ile-Iwe, Lagos state.
The accident, which occurred around midday, involved a six-tyre trailer with registration number AGL 514 XD, a Honda Pilot (FST 992 DV), a Toyota Camry (EKY 753 JA), and an unregistered tricycle.
According to preliminary investigations, the crash was caused by a mechanical brake failure in the fully loaded trailer, whose driver lost control while descending the busy road.
The out-of-control vehicle reportedly crushed the tricycle beyond recognition before ramming into a Honda Pilot, crossing the median, and colliding with a Toyota Camry and nearby property on the opposite lane.
In a statement issued by the LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, he stated that their operatives acted with remarkable speed and professionalism to secure the area and coordinate rescue activities,
“They promptly rescued two severely trapped victims after confirming the instantaneous death of the tricycle operator.
“The accident scene was immediately cordoned off to forestall secondary incidents and facilitate a seamless emergency operation.
“Upon securing the area, LASTMA personnel swiftly notified relevant emergency agencies, including operatives of the Nigeria police force and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU).
“Thereafter, security officers from the Ile-Epo police division conveyed the deceased tricycle operator, alongside the two critically injured survivors, to the general hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical attention and proper procedural documentation,” the statement read.
The general manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as tragic and avoidable, blaming it on poor vehicle maintenance and disregard for speed limits.
He condoled with the bereaved family and prayed for the recovery of the injured victims, reaffirming the Lagos state government’s commitment to road safety and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists, particularly heavy-duty vehicle operators, to conduct routine mechanical inspections and adhere to all safety regulations.
