Troops of the sixth brigade Nigerian army under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) on Thursday, March 19, arrested two gunrunners during a routine stop-and-search operation along Wukari-Ikyaior road in Wukari Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba state.
The suspects, identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Ukum LGA in Benue state, and Elisha Danladi, 38, a native of Wukari, were apprehended by troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari, while riding a motorcycle.
A search of their vehicle led to the recovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, ₦29,200 in cash, two mobile phones, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, charms, personal belongings, and the motorcycle used for transportation.
The suspects and recovered items are now in custody as investigations continue to determine the source and intended use of the ammunition.
The sixth brigade commander, Brig. Gen. Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro commended the troops for their vigilance and swift action.
He emphasized that the operation aligns with the chief of army staff’s directives to decisively eliminate criminal elements and enhance security across Taraba state.
He urged the troops to maintain momentum in tackling criminality and reassured law-abiding citizens of the army’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Akaliro also called on the public to support security agencies by providing credible information on suspicious activities.
He further reiterated the Nigerian army‘s commitment to a robust reward and disciplinary system, promising that officers and soldiers who display professionalism, courage, and dedication during operations would be duly recognized and rewarded.
