Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) on Sunday, August 23, killed a suspected bandit and arrested two suspected kidnappers during separate operations in Benue State.
The Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, Lt Ahmad Zubairu, disclosed this in a statement.
Zubairu said the troops, acting on credible intelligence, moved against suspected kidnappers operating an illegal checkpoint along the Jortar-Atume axis.
According to him, the troops engaged the criminals in a gun battle upon arriving at the area, during which one suspected bandit, identified by the nickname “Cool Nigga,” was neutralised.
He said other members of the group fled the scene following the encounter, abandoning a motorcycle which was subsequently recovered by the troops.
The OPWS spokesperson said the operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts by security forces to disrupt the activities of criminal elements operating across Benue State.
He added that the troops had continued to rely on credible intelligence to identify and target criminal groups involved in kidnapping, banditry and other forms of insecurity in the state.
In a separate operation carried out on the same day in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, soldiers arrested two suspected kidnappers at Gou Village.
The suspects were identified as 44-year-old Terhile Iyo and 32-year-old Vershima Emmanuel.
The arrests, formed part of ongoing security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and preventing kidnappers from establishing footholds in communities across the state.
The latest operations come amid continued military efforts to tackle banditry and kidnapping in Benue and other parts of the North-Central region.
