Troops of the Nigerian army have survived an ambush, eliminating several armed bandits following a fierce gun battle with fighters linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji during an operation in Zamfara State.
Security sources disclosed that the mission, carried out on Friday, March 20, involved the 8 Division Strike Force as part of ongoing offensives to dismantle criminal networks across the North-West.
The troops, it was learned, advanced on a hideout associated with Turji, situated deep inside the Kagara Forest area in Fakai, within Shinkafi local government area.
During the operation, two combat support vehicles developed mechanical issues near Maberaya village in Isa Local Government Area, forcing a temporary halt in movement.
At that point, armed bandits believed to be loyal to Turji launched an ambush, exploiting their advantage of higher ground and dense forest cover.
Despite the surprise attack, troops responded with heavy firepower, engaging the attackers in a prolonged exchange that led to the neutralisation of several bandits.
Three soldiers and one operative of the Department of State Services, DSS, sustained injuries during the clash and were evacuated to the 8 division military hospital for medical attention.
Reinforcements from Forward Operating Bases in Isa and Shinkafi were later deployed, allowing troops to regain full control of the area and stabilise the situation.
Military sources noted that the operation is part of a wider coordinated campaign to weaken bandit groups, restrict their movements, and restore security to affected communities in the region.
