Osborn Nweze Umahi, 28-year-old son of minister of works David Umahi, emerged chairman-elect of Ohaozara local government area after the local government election held on Saturday, August 22, in Ebonyi state.
Osborn Umahi contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is expected to lead the council for the next phase of its grassroots development.
Shortly after his victory, the chairman-elect pledged to forgo his statutory salary and allowances throughout his tenure.
He said the decision was driven by his desire to prioritise development and public service over the financial benefits attached to political office.
Osborn Umahi identified infrastructure development, youth empowerment, support for businesses and improved local government services as key areas his administration would focus on.
He also pledged to use his tenure to improve the wellbeing of residents and support initiatives that would promote economic activities across the local government.
Osborn Umahi, an engineer and businessman, is the son of David Umahi, the minister of works and former governor of Ebonyi state.
His emergence at 28 makes him one of the youngest Nigerians to secure an elective political position and assume a leadership role at the grassroots level.
The new chairman will be expected to translate his campaign promises, including his decision to forgo his salary and allowances, into tangible projects and improved services for residents of Ohaozara.
