On Thursday afternoon, unidentified gunmen shot and killed a student at the University of Cross River State’s Calabar campus.
Mr Onen Onen, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident.“A student was killed.The Vice Chancellor will make a statement about it,” he said, declining to elaborate.
According to reports, the gunmen entered the school in a Toyota Sienna car, drove straight to where the victim was with his friends, and shot him dead.
“The incident happened right in front of me and my friends,” a source said.
“We were walking past the Engineering Faculty when we noticed some students sitting in a group and chatting”.
According to the source, the gunmen took the dead student’s bag, got into their car, and drove away.
“We suspect one of those people he was chatting with was giving those hoodlums information about where to find him, and when they arrived, he realized he was the person they were looking for, prompting him to flee.”
According to reports, the gunmen were successful in driving out of the school grounds before the institution’s security team, which included police officers, swung into action.
When they locked the gate and began searching people leaving the campus, it was too late.
SP Irene Ugbo, the state police spokesperson, did not return her calls as of the time of filing this report.
