At least 50 people were killed by three suicide bomb blasts in the city of Damaturu, the state capital of Yobe, on Friday as Muslims gathered for prayers to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
It was gathered that two bombers, an elderly woman and a 10-year-old girl, detonated explosives at prayer grounds in the city at about 7:40 a.m., Nigerian army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said in an e-mailed statement. Another bomber was probably the only fatality from a third blast in the city, said resident Tijjani Ba Kura.
“This attack indicates that no where is safe, it occurs here and there, killing innocent people, it is very horrific,” Goni Bukar Lawan, another resident, said from Damaturu.
The attack came after the northeastern city of Gombe was hit by twin explosions that left at least 50 people dead late Thursday, according to witnesses.
Attacks have intensified since President Muhammadu Buhari took office at the end of May. Buhari, who won elections after campaigning on a pledge promise to crush the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency, replaced the country’s top military officers this week.
