The United States Mission in Nigeria has strongly condemned the attack on Nuku and Woro villages in Kwara State, where Boko Haram militants killed 170 residents on Tuesday, February 3.
In a Facebook post on Friday, the US described the violence as horrific and expressed solidarity with the affected communities.
“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara state in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for,” the statement reads.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence.”
The US also welcomed actions taken by the Nigerian government to safeguard the villages, highlighting directives for federal and state authorities to provide relief to survivors and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
President Bola Tinubu responded by deploying an army battalion to the affected areas to restore security.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Wednesday, February 4, that the military unit would lead “Operation Savannah Shield” to checkmate the terrorists and protect defenceless communities.
Tinubu condemned the attack, labeling the attackers as heartless for choosing soft targets in their doomed campaign of terror.
In neighboring Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered heightened security measures across border communities to prevent the violence from spreading.
He expressed condolences to the people and government of Kwara, describing the killings as a painful tragedy.
On his X page, Adeleke affirmed that Osun authorities would continue monitoring the situation closely and collaborate with security agencies to protect residents.
