The United States (US) government has imposed a fresh 104% tariff on all imported goods from China, after China’s refusal to remove its retaliatory tariffs.
The White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed this on Tuesday, April 8.
She stated that stating the new tariffs will be effective in the midnight on Wednesday, April 9.
Leavitt reiterated Trump’s view that China made a strategic mistake by retaliating against previous US tariffs.
She said, “The president, when America is punched, he punches back harder, that’s why there will be 104% tariffs going into effect on China tonight at midnight.”
Leavitt also mentioned that Trump would be gracious if Chinese President Xi Jinping sought to negotiate a deal, indicating a possible opening for talks despite the rising tensions.
This move followed Trump’s claim that China is eager to make a deal badly.
The additional 104% tariff builds on Trump’s strategy of reciprocal tariffs, which already included heavy levies on Chinese goods.
In response to Trump’s ‘Liberation Day tariff,’ China imposed a 34% retaliatory tariff on US imports, vowing to fight to the end and accusing the US of blackmail.
The Trump administration has defended its tough trade actions by accusing China of using non-market policies to secure global dominance in key manufacturing industries and devastating US industry.
