The United States (U.S) Department of State on Tuesday, April 28, announced plans to introduce a limited-edition passport featuring the image of president Donald Trump.
The redesigned passport is commemorative, marking the country’s 250th independence anniversary.
Mock-ups shared on the White House’s official X handle show Trump’s portrait on the inside cover, alongside excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, the American flag, and his signature in gold.
Another page features a well-known painting depicting the Founding Fathers at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The passports are expected to be issued in the summer as part of the administration’s ‘America250’ celebrations.
Planned activities include a Grand Prix race at the National Mall in August and an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event on the White House South Lawn in June.
Tommy Pigott, spokesperson for the state department, said the booklets will feature customised artwork and enhanced imagery while retaining the security features of standard U.S. passports.
The cover design has also been modified, with “United States of America” enlarged and positioned above the national crest.
The back cover will display the American flag, with “250” centred among the 13 stars from the 1777 version of the flag.
A state department official said the passports will be available to any U.S. citizen applying during the rollout period, subject to availability.
The official added that the documents will be issued only through the Washington passport agency.
The launch is expected to coincide with the anniversary celebrations in July.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway across the U.S for nationwide celebrations, including events such as a fireworks display at Mount Rushmore.
While commemorative items like coins or national park passes are common in the U.S, a passport, an internationally recognised form of identification typically valid for 10 years, being used in this way is highly unusual.
Last year, Trump’s name was also featured on the Kennedy Centre and the U.S institute of peace.
