The United States, US, diplomatic mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians against attempting to manipulate or falsify information during visa applications, warning that such misconduct could trigger tougher scrutiny for everyone seeking entry into the country.
In a message posted on its official X account on Monday, the American mission reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard the credibility of its visa process through comprehensive vetting procedures.
“Those who seek to commit fraud bring increased scrutiny on all visa applicants. We protect the U.S. visa system with rigorous screening, and our officers take fraud very seriously,” the post reads.
“Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors.“
The mission encouraged individuals who have credible information about visa-related misconduct to alert the appropriate authorities through designated reporting platforms.
Earlier, on February 9, the US had shared a similar advisory on X, pointing to repeated cases of Nigerians overstaying their visas as a significant reason for tighter restrictions that affect other applicants.
According to the mission, improved compliance with visa rules would help preserve travel privileges for categories such as students, business visitors, and families who abide by immigration laws.
The advisory comes amid persistent concerns from US consular officials over fraudulent activities linked to a fraction of visa applications originating from Nigeria.
In previous years, these issues have led to policy adjustments, including shortened visa validity periods for many Nigerian applicants and heightened background investigations by the US Department of State as part of broader efforts to maintain the integrity of the American immigration framework.
