The Defence Headquarters has announced that its troops had killed a “notorious top terrorist Commander,’’ Abu Mujahid, in a battle on the outskirts of Alagarno in Borno State.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who disclosed this in a statement obtained in Abuja on Thursday, said the Commander was killed during a “daring attack’’ by his group on troops who were on patrol of the area on April 20.

The statement said that troops also captured and destroyed some rocket propelled grenades and vehicle-mounted Anti-Aircraft guns during the encounter with the insurgents.

According to it, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which were planted by the insurgents to halt advancing troops’ comprehensive operation were cleared, as troops pursued the terrorists who fled the area.

The statement also said that there were ongoing military offensives on identified terrorists in some forest locations, in spite of obstacles and land mines planted by the insurgents.

It said that aggressive patrols, mop-up and cordon and search operations were also ongoing in the other locations in search for weapons and terrorists.
