The Presidency on Tuesday announced that Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stepped down from office over pressing family concerns.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement issued by the President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation letter the same day and commended him for his years of service to the country and the Nigeria Police Force.
“We are grateful for IGP Egbetokun’s professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security,” the President said in a statement.
Egbetokun, who assumed office in June 2023, was appointed for a four-year tenure scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act 2020.
Following his exit, President Tinubu approved the immediate appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police to maintain leadership stability within the Force.
The Presidency noted that Disu’s operational background and leadership experience positioned him to effectively steer the organisation during a critical period.
In keeping with statutory requirements, the Nigeria police council is expected to meet to deliberate on Disu’s nomination as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the senate for confirmation.
The President reiterated his administration’s resolve to strengthen national security institutions and ensure the Nigeria Police Force continues to operate with professionalism, accountability, and full capacity to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
