The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction backed by Nyesom Wike has screened its sole presidential aspirant, Sandy Onor, alongside 25 governorship aspirants from 17 states ahead of the party’s primary elections.
The screening exercise was held on Thursday at the PDP Legacy House in Abuja.
In a statement signed by Chinwe Nnorom, national director of publicity, the party said it resumed its electoral activities following the resolution of its leadership crisis by the Supreme Court, which affirmed the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee.
According to the statement, the presidential screening committee is chaired by former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, while former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, heads the governorship screening committee.
The party disclosed that only one presidential aspirant and 25 governorship aspirants from 17 states participated in the screening exercise, while others were still completing documentation.
Speaking after the exercise, Sandy Onor backed President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy, describing the policy as a bold move that released funds for national development.
He, however, stressed the need for greater accountability in the management of the funds generated from the policy.
Among those screened for governorship tickets were Kefiano Ropshik (Plateau), Kelechi Anosike (Abia), Kayode Ogunshola (Oyo), Hazeem Gbolarumi (Oyo), Samson Nnamani (Enugu), and Mustapha Lamido (Jigawa).
Others included David Ombugadu and David Emmanuel (Nasarawa), Oladimeji Hassan and Suleiman Kawu (Kwara), Alex Ladan (Plateau), Adamu Ahmed (Bauchi), Mohammed Bello (Kano), and Onuogbu Ogba (Abia).
The PDP stated that its governorship primaries would hold on May 24, while the presidential primary election is scheduled for May 26.
