Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the State Executive Council, a move announced on Thursday through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.
The statement directed all Commissioners and Special Advisers to hand over responsibilities to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries immediately.
Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to the outgoing members for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors.
The dissolution comes just 48 hours after Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, confirmed ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at resolving the protracted political crisis in the state.
President Bola Tinubu met with key political actors from Rivers State, including Governor Fubara and his predecessor, in a bid to ease tensions stemming from a lingering power struggle.
The closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa also involved other state leaders.
The intervention follows an ongoing impeachment process against Governor Fubara, initiated by lawmakers aligned with Wike — the third such notice to date, now entangled in legal proceedings.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 10, Wike disclosed that the meeting on Wednesday, February 9 was convened at President Tinubu’s instance to broker peace between the governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“I remember this is the second time the President is intervening and believe by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time,” Wike said.
“I have told the assembly to do the needful and obey Mr. President, which I know they will not hesitate. I also believe the governor will carry out his own part to make sure that this is the final time Rivers people will hear this kind of discord.”
Reports indicated that following the meeting, Governor Fubara accompanied the FCT Minister to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, a gesture observers suggested could signal a softening of hostilities.
However, it remains uncertain whether pro-Wike lawmakers will withdraw the impeachment notice or if the latest round of negotiations will produce a lasting resolution.
