A 40-year-old woman, whose name is yet-to-be revealed, set herself on fire after her husband divorced her in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
She committed the act on the outskirts of the village.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Dutse on Friday, August 23.
Shiisu, said the woman, a resident of Garin Mallam village, doused herself in petrol and set herself ablaze.
“On Thursday (August 22), around 7:40 AM, the command received a heartbreaking report from Guri, stating that a 40-year-old woman in Garin Mallam village had doused herself in petrol, set herself on fire, and was burned beyond recognition,” Shiisu said.
“She committed the act on the outskirts of the village.
“A team of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident.”
The Police PPRO further stated that the officers transported the charred body to the hospital before handing it over to the family for burial.
He explained that a preliminary investigation showed the deceased had been suffering from depression for several months after her divorce.
The PPRO also mentioned that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi urged people to seek advice and counseling from their elders on difficult matters to prevent such tragic event.
