The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara state, Jamil Magayaki, on Thursday, March 12, resigned from the party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Magayaki said his decision was influenced by the prevailing political developments in the state.
It would be recalled that the governor of Zamfara state, Dauda Lawal, on Monday also left the PDP for APC.
The governor’s defection came after wide consultations with key political stakeholders, party leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.
The statement read: “I, Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the Zamfara state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, hereby announce my formal defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“My decision to join the APC is based on the current political reality in Zamfara state, which demands alignment with a platform better positioned to address the challenges of security, development, and governance for the benefit of our people.”
Magayaki’s defection comes amid a wave of political realignments in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier in March 2026, the state governor, Dauda Lawal, announced his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the ruling All Progressives Congress after consultations with political stakeholders across the state.
The governor cited internal crises within the PDP and the need for stronger political cooperation to address security and development challenges in Zamfara.
The PDP in the state had also faced a series of defections in recent months, including lawmakers of the Zamfara State House of Assembly and thousands of party members who moved to the APC, reflecting growing political shifts within the state’s political landscape.
